Newcastle has on Ocean Race!!! 12th January 2013

Great news for local paddlers.

As part of the Open Water series Newcastle will play host to an ocean race.

Details of the race are to be confirmed but it will be aimed at a longer downwind race. Perfect preparation for anyone travelling to Perth for the Doctor world cup race.

The event will be open to Ocean Ski’s/Spec Ski’s/SUP’s/OC’s

Goldie’ Classic Date has been Set! 4th November

The iconic Ironman challenge of Newcastle is on again. The date 4th November 2012.

Goldie McKerras was an icon of Newcastle Surf Lifesaving. The event in his honour is the third running and has been hugely successful.

Shark attacks Ski paddler off Newcastle coastline!!!!

In what can only be described as unbelievable, local Redhead SLSC member Mark Ayre survived a scary experience with what is presumed to be a juvenile Great White Shark.

On the 27th May at approximately 2pm, Mark and fellow club member Luke Nolan embarked on a downwind paddle from Swansea Channel heading towards Newcastle Harbour when the Shark struck between Blacksmith’s Beach and Redhead.

It appears that the Shark has “hit” the back of the ski, latched on and caused Mark to roll off.

Thining quickly Mark, perched himself “cat like” on the upturned ski until the shark, which was mere centimeters from him, decided it didn’t like the taste of fibreglass.

Mark described it as “i just stopped dead, i though i had hit a whale or something, next minute i was upside down”.

Amazingly after the shark had left and Mark righted his ski and continued the paddle into town, approx 16 km’s.

Unfortunately this was made necessary due to the heavy seas and lack of a safe place to come ashore, and harder by the fact the ski was filling with water from the puncture holes.

I hope to add some photos of the teeth marks in coming days.

Amazingingly a 49 year old has beaten the field to claim his 12th title.

No excuse for not getting on the water!

See the attached flyer for a program to encourae people to take up paddling. Run in coperation by SLS and Australian Canoeing the program is asking for anyone interested in taking up paddling to register interest and come along to the testing day at Redhead SLSC Sunday the 12th May at 10 am.

The Next Wave, SLSA’s Talent Id program, with support

from Australian Canoeing is searching for surf athletes with

the potential to become sprint kayaking Olympians.

Are you between 14-23 years old?

Do you have good power, endurance and upper

body strength?

Would you like to be an Australian Olympian?

No paddling experience required.

Selected athletes will work with coach Ches Suska and be

provided with a training program that is complementary

to their surf life saving commitments.

Selections will be made following a physical testing

session at Redhead SLSC on Saturday 12 May.
